Adobe Flash support in Google Chrome beta using gnash-plugin

Posted in Linux , google , howto

I can understand not including the support by default. No need to create bloat, but I want flash support for Google Chrome in Linux, so here goes…

Install gnash-plugin

(my only prerequisite was bzip2-libs)

# yum install gnash-plugin.i686

I tried swfdec-mozilla first, and while chrome would recognize it, flash content would just display as a black screen. This is the same experience I had with this plugin for Firefox. I also tried the real adobe version with no luck.

Long live the gnash-plugin.

Install the plugin for Chrome

If you’re using Fedora, google-chrome will be installed in /opt/google/chrome/
If you’re using Ubuntu or some other os, it _may_ be installed in /opt/google-chrome/

Create a “plugins” directory under your chrome directory.

# cd /opt/google/chrome
# mkdir plugins

Link the flash plugin.

# cd plugins
# ln -s `rpm -ql gnash-plugin.i686`

Restart

Restart chrome and go to “about:plugins”. You should see the plugin listed at the top.

Test

And here’s a “flash test” page:

http://www.chemgapedia.de/vsengine/info/en/help/requirements/flash.html

Tada!

Hmm, it would be interesting to see if you could just link the mozilla plugin directory in place of creating a new one and linking your plugins there. I couldn’t do that because i’m using 64 bit firefox with real (not wrapped) 64 bit plugins and 32 bit chrome.

It’s an alternative to adobe’s flash plugin, however, I think i’m having the best overall experience using the real adobe version.

Just consider this: The gnash guys have a community that reverse engineers parts of flash, sends the results to the Gnash guys, and they use it to code Gnash. Oh, and if you’ve ever signed the licensing agreement for the real Adobe Flash, you can’t code for the project, for legal reasons.

I’m pretty impressed with how well gnash works considering those conditions.
