This article, End Windows Overeager Installation Checking on lifehacker, got me thinking about a useful tweak that I haven’t seen yet. It would be nice to inject a little line at the bottom of an installation window that says, “Show default settings”. This little link would, when clicked, show you what the app suggested for you during an application installation.
The new default behavior would be to uncheck everything. I would never again accidentally install a useless toolbar or setting that I didn’t want.
So many apps want to install a toolbar, take over as the default choice, or select some other intrusive behavior as the default. This uncheck function is especially needed for Windows applications. It would help to save the typical user from his/herself.
If you could have this running before you launched any kind of installation program, forcing you to choose the options that you feel are best, the world might explode. But have no fear, it’s hard enough for the average user to click the next button several times before hitting finish.
Let’s just chalk it up as another tweak for the wishlist.
