Bono the digital suppressor

This is a pic taken from an iphone at a recent U2 concert. It looks like they’re really hurting for money as an artist. If only they could afford some lighting and stage effects. Blame it on the file sharers.

Bono’s net policing logic is broken.

A decade’s worth of music file-sharing and swiping has made clear that the people it hurts are the creators…the people this reverse Robin Hooding benefits are rich service providers, whose swollen profits perfectly mirror the lost receipts of the music business.

Sorry Bono, but the era of file sharing is working out better for the actual artists. It’s only the labels that are feeling the pinch. Even U2 has had quite the success lately, especially with their live shows. There have been quite a few success stories from artists producing their own work and even releasing it for free.

Radiohead’s In Rainbows was their first album released after their contract ended with EMI. In Rainbows entered both the UK and US Billboard charts at #1 and by October 2008, it had sold greater than three million copies worldwide. It was ranked as one of the best albums of 2007 by several publications. It also won two Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Album and Best Special Limited Edition Package in 2009. Nuff said.

We know from America’s noble effort to stop child pornography, not to mention China’s ignoble effort to suppress online dissent, that it’s perfectly possible to track content.

It’s easy to see which side you’re on Bono-the-digital-suppressor. Why you even bothered to mention America in that statement, I have no idea.
lars-metallicaYou should get together with the old Metallica and start a clan, however, it’s more likely he will want to jump on the money train after “observing Radiohead and Trent Reznor’s success.” (as Metallica put it in a Rolling Stone interview back in 2008)
