Cheap RAID storage

Posted in Economy

RAID storage has come down in price in a very short period of time. You can get a 8 bay enclosure with RAID controller for about $350 now, like this one from Rosewill. Is there really any point to spending tens of thousands for small workgroups? I’ve always liked the brand “Promise” but i’m wondering how well a more generic brand like Rosewill or Norco will work out.

Rosewill RSV-S8 SATA 3G 3.5″ HDD 8-Bay RAID 0/1/10/5/JBOD Storage Enclosure System with 120mm cooling fan/ Port Multiplier/ PCIe card included

NORCO DS-1000 10-bay 3U Hot-swap Rackmount eSATA RAID Hard Drive Storage Subsystem

I’m only talking about attaching one of these to a Gentoo server with 10-12 nfs clients leaching off of it.

Perhaps a straight network attached device would work out best.

Like this Promise LaCie 5big Network - 5 Bay RAID - 5TB
