How to use the Riot Shield in Modern Warfare 2

Posted in games , howto

I’ve seen several people play with the riot shield with varying degrees of success. If you have more deaths than kills but you win the round and have a higher score than some people with more kills than you, you’re doing something right. But what if you could get the kills and help your team mates out by playing as bait?

Here’s a few different ways that I use the riot shield. These methods work for me. For the secondary weapons, sometimes I use hand guns, other times I use rocket launchers, but that’s not what this is about. If I’m using secondary weapons all the time, I would be better off without the shield slowing me down. I like to focus on riot shield tactics that really work.

The Martyr

Equipment: Claymore

I run towards a group of enemies until they start shooting my direction, then i quickly crouch and continue moving straight forward. When I get nice and close, I plant the claymore and BOOM! Sometimes I can get a double kill with this. I think the Danger Close perk helps make the claymore blast even bigger. It really helps to do this into a group of people so that it’s more likely to get triggered. Even if it doesn’t, the riot shield comes right back. Sometimes they run away, which means I continue to live and deflect bullets.

The Patient

Equipment: Throwing Knife

modern-warfare-2-perks-t2-lightweightPerk 2: Lightweight
modern-warfare-2-perks-t2-lightweightPerk 3: Ninja Pro

The basic idea here is to approach an enemy, and when you’re in shotgun range (normal shotguns, not the noob cannon 1887’s) throw that knife. It’s lightning quick to throw and will result in an instant kill. This will work on semi-stationary enemies that are determined to shoot around your shield. Try to catch them reloading in front of you. Just remember not to strafe! Strafing makes you vulnerable on your sides. This method will not work against people running around knifing with a care package. If you’re up against these guys or noob cannons, move straight back and work with your team. Hopefully a teammate will take them out before they get you. Even if they get you, it’s a second or two longer your buddies have to avenge your death.

The Leader

Equipment: Semtex

modern-warfare-2-perks-t2-lightweightPerk 2: Cold Blooded
modern-warfare-2-perks-t2-lightweightPerk 3: Sit Rep

This is my pure support loadout. I don’t get as many kills, but I don’t die quite as much either. It is vital that you stay near your team — the marathon helps you keep up. Cold Blooded will keep the stuff in the sky from detecting you. However, sentry guns won’t target you either, so it’s a tradeoff. My other option here would be Stopping Power, but it’s still going to take 2 melee’s to kill someone that’s at 100% health. You should be out in front a lot and able to see where enemies are. You will see enemy claymores, C4, and insertions, while thrown grenades will be bright red dots. Many people won’t even bother to shoot at you, running some other direction instead of fighting with you. You should communicate with your team where enemies are, which direction they’re headed, etc. You’re doubling as a living breathing UAV. That’s why I call this one “Leader”.
