Linux defeats W32.Virut.CF virus attack on Australian Power Grid

Australian news sites are reporting that Integral Energy, the company that supplies energy throughout New South Wales and Queensland, has suffered through a W32.Virut.CF virus outbreak. The company had to disinfect all 1000 of their desktops. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the company’s anti-virus software hadn’t been updated since at least February.

Luckily for the Aussies, the power grid’s servers run on Sun Solaris. According to The PC Report, when the control systems became infected they just replaced them with Linux machines. Windows? Seriously? What’s next, nuclear power stations with desktops running Vista? I do believe this calls for a new category: “fail”.

note: the mass bsod pictured here is a re-enactment of actual events that happen far too often, but it does not depict the microsoft fail described in this story. Speaking of bsod’s, with the millions of computers powered on right now, I wonder how many blue-screen each second?
