Assembly Basics, hello world!

There’s only two handfuls of assembly instructions you really need to know. The others aren’t used as often. Many of the instructions are made up of three characters with an operand, a comma, then another operand. Some others have four chars instead. To call a BIOS function that does some pre determined stuff such as printing something, you use INT. Most functions have multiple methods you can call so you’ll need to figure out which routine you want and put that number into the ah register first:

How to really delete TWiki attachments from the Trash

Moving lets you transfer an attachment from one topic to another. The soft delete moves an attachment to the special TrashAttachment topic in the Trash web, where it’s hidden but can be “undeleted” with system administrator access. Click on action on the file in the FileAttachment table, then in the …

eeeBuntu Linux on the eeePC

The small size of the eeePC makes it a handy little machine to take with you anywhere you go. There’s plenty of smart phones out there that are just as expensive or more and lack 90% of the features of a netbook. Sporting a freshly installed eeeBuntu, the netbook does the job of browsing and word processing with an Atom N280 chip, 1024×600 back-lit LCD, two gigs of memory, Ethernet, wifi, three USB ports and a VGA port. The latest version of eeeBuntu Linux was installed from a USB live image.

Balance shafts in an internal combustion engine

The frequency of the vibration is twice the engine RPM, while the strength of the vibration is determined by the rod to stroke ratio and the mass of the reciprocating parts. The heavier the pistons and connecting rods, the greater the amplitude. The larger the stroke is compared to the bore, the larger the connecting rod angle becomes. The greater the angle, the more piston speed is affected. The reason that motors such as the Honda H22 and the Mitsubishi 4G63 have balance shafts is because of their displacement size and long stroke compared to small piston bore. Smaller motors (such as the B16A and B18C5 don’t have these balance shafts because of their smaller size and lower weight.

PowerPoint screw ups

I learned about the pitfalls of slide presentations in public speaking class, and I cringe in just about every presentation I have to sit through now. It seems everyone needs powerpoint slides full of bullets to make it through their talk. Perhaps there should be a ban on bullet point slides without visual aids, or at least come up with a golden ratio, 2 bullet points per picture would be nice.

District 9 sequel - District 10 Return of the Prawns

If you saw Neill Blomkamp’s District 9, then you know it’s set up for an easy sequel. Blomkamp has been a professional animator since age 16 and has worked as 3D animator, lead animator, and lead 3D animator on a number of popular TV shows. I’m sure many people are disappointed in the big Halo movie let down. You have Fox, Universal, and Microsoft to blame for that. But as for a District 9 sequel, what are the most obvious routes to take? I hope he comes up with something completely original that no one has thought of as of yet.

Instakill SSH sessions to mess with ssh-happy users on your box

Want to have some fun with users that keep ssh’ing to your box? Let them in, then kill them right away. I don’t even remember when/why I wrote this silly script, but here it is. There’s a lot better ways you could do this, and if you want any real ssh security, don’t even let them log in at all.

Simple php function to check if post variables are set without triggering warnings

If you check the contents of a post variable that never got passed, you get warnings. If you like keeping your verbosity set that high and want to avoid this warning, or you just want to avoid checking against a non-existent variable, try this

Send gzipped PHP output to users browser’s to save bandwidth

The oneliner ob_gzhandler only works for Apache and you have to have the mod_gzip module loaded. This method is crap. So to send gzipped PHP output to users browser’s to save bandwidth, try this. It also helps for slow Internet connections and large pages too.
