Send SMS text messages from Google gmail-gchat

Did you know that you can send SMS text messages from Google gchat? Right from your email inbox window, you can add the phone number as a new contact. Enter it with + and then the country code, so if it’s a U.S. number like (202)555-1212, then enter it as +12025551212 as an AIM buddy contact. It will show up with a little phone icon in your gmail chat window. You can rename it whatever you want at this point. When you chat with that contact, it gets sent to the phone number as an SMS message. Here’s the response I received when I sent a message to someone’s phone recently:

(Auto Response) This mobile user has been notified of your IM.

Your IM will be sent if the user accepts. Thank you for using IM to Mobile!
(Auto Response) This mobile user has been notified of your IM.

On the phone, the recipient will see this:

AIM user xxxxx sent you a msg. Reply ‘a’ to accept or ‘d’ to decline all msgs from this user. ‘on’ allow all users ’stop’ stop all users ‘h’ help

You can also skip AIM and do it directly through one of the google labs apps.
