Who’s afraid of a little swine flu?

The New York Times ran a story today reporting that “As soon as swine flu vaccinations start next month, some people getting them will drop dead of heart attacks or strokes, some children will have seizures and some pregnant women will miscarry.”

But according to the CDC on their Key Facts About Seasonal Influenza page:

Every year in the United States, on average:
* 5% to 20% of the population gets the flu;
* more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu-related complications; and
* about 36,000 people die from flu-related causes.
Some people, such as older people, young children, pregnant women and people with certain health conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease), are at increased risk for serious complications from seasonal flu illness.

Well isn’t that special. No need for alarm, nothing to see here move along. But just last month, there was a mini outbreak on the Penny Arcade Expo show floor. There were only about 60,000 people at that show. Was that even real? Just a publicity stunt?

So check out this google map of swine flu outbreaks.

Purple marker is confirmed or probable
Pink marker is suspect
Yellow marker is negative
Fatal cases have no dot

Even scarier is the urgent update that I just saw on that map:

Due to the increasing amount of data, we have moved to a more scalable mapping/data tracking system…

So here’s the new tracker:

I wonder how ridiculous this will be in a few months, around January perhaps?

UPDATE:

Wow I just noticed a google ad on my own page for Cattle management software! “The Most User-Friendly Option in Cattle Management Software”. prisonplanet or one of the other big conspiracy websites should run with that!!!
